Resize Your Image to the YouTube Thumbnail Size (1280×720)

YouTube shows every thumbnail in a fixed 16:9 box. Upload the wrong shape and your frame gets trimmed or letterboxed. The panel below is pre-set to 1280×720, so the ratio is correct from the start.

YouTube renders every thumbnail inside a fixed 16:9 slot. Hand it a 4:3 photo and you get side pillars or a trimmed edge; hand it a very tall image and the top and bottom disappear. Matching 1280×720 before you upload is what keeps the frame you composed.

    YouTube thumbnail sizes in 2026

    Placement Target size Ratio
    Video thumbnail 1280 × 720 16:9
    Minimum width 640 px 16:9
Maximum file size 2 MB —
    Channel banner 2560 × 1440 16:9
    Profile picture 800 × 800 1:1

1280×720 is the size YouTube recommends and the one it actually displays. Anything larger is downscaled, and the 2 MB cap is the limit that really bites — a 1280×720 JPEG almost always fits under it.

Why resize instead of letting YouTube do it

The panel below is pre-filled with 1280 × 720 and defaults to Pad: the whole photo fits inside the 16:9 frame and the empty sides are filled with a blurred copy, so nothing is lost. To cover the thumbnail instead, switch to Fill — it crops the extra edges and always keeps the centre, which is exactly what YouTube would do, except it happens locally and you see the result before uploading.

One honest limit: upscaling is allowed, but a source smaller than 1280×720 goes soft, so start from the largest original you have.

How to make a YouTube thumbnail

    1. Drop your image into the box below. The target is already set to 1280 × 720 with Pad selected.
    2. Keep everything or cover the frame. Pad keeps the whole photo and blurs the empty sides; Fill crops the extra edges instead.
    3. Download the result. Processing a folder of stills? Drop them all in and take everything as one ZIP.

Three mistakes that ruin a thumbnail

If the file is still too heavy

Resizing fixes the pixels, not the weight. YouTube refuses files above 2 MB, so run the 1280×720 result through the image compressor next. For ratio-based work rather than exact pixels, use the general resize tool. A 16:9 frame needed at a larger size is on 1920×1080.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the YouTube thumbnail size?+

The recommended size is 1280×720 pixels, a 16:9 ratio. YouTube accepts anything from 640 pixels wide up, but it always displays a single 16:9 slot, so a different shape gets letterboxed or trimmed to fit.

What is the maximum YouTube thumbnail file size?+

2 MB. A 1280×720 JPEG usually lands far below that, which is why matching the size first matters: an oversized upload can be rejected outright instead of being quietly shrunk.

Will this tool upload my image?+

No. Everything runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, no account is required and the file never leaves your computer.

Can I process several images at once?+

Yes. Drop in a whole folder, set the size once, and every image is resized locally. When the batch finishes you can download all of the results as one ZIP file.

Why does part of my photo get cut off?+

A 16:9 slot cannot hold a 4:3 photo and still output exactly 1280×720, so something has to go. Fill mode always keeps the centre; switch to Pad to keep the whole frame, with the empty sides filled by a blurred copy.

What if my image is smaller than 1280×720?+

Upscaling is allowed and the output still hits the exact size, but a small source goes soft. Start from the largest original you have.

Which format should a thumbnail be?+

JPG. A 1280×720 JPG lands far below the 2 MB cap, and YouTube re-encodes the upload anyway. PNG only helps when the frame is mostly text or flat colour.
